Statement
Accessibility
Cognitive distance is partly an accessibility idea, so this site holds itself to it.
Target
WCAG 2.2 level AA across the whole site, plus several AAA criteria: animation from interactions (the still edition), larger focus indicators, and enhanced contrast for body text.
What you can change
- Still edition. Turn motion off in the footer or the keyboard sheet. It follows your system’s reduced motion setting by default.
- Day and night. Follows your system setting by default; your choice is remembered.
- Plain wording. The definition of cognitive distance has a plain version on the Idea page.
- Keyboard shortcuts. Press ? to see them, and turn single key shortcuts off if they get in your way.
- High contrast and forced colours modes are supported, and the layout holds at 400% zoom and with custom text spacing.
How it is tested
Automated: axe on every page in both editions at phone and desktop widths, on every build. Manual, each release: keyboard only, VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, NVDA with Firefox and Chrome, TalkBack on Android, 200% and 400% zoom, text spacing overrides, Windows high contrast, and reduced motion.
Known issues
Some illustrations are placeholders while the final drawings are processed. They carry the same text alternatives the final images will.
