In one paragraph

Every region had its own way to sign in and onboard. People moving between products met a different logic each time. I designed one authentication language for all of them.

Before. Red is people’s model; the grid is the system.

The distance

Fifteen regions, fifteen sign in flows. The rules underneath were similar. What people saw was not, so every product taught them a new model of the same thing.

The working

I prototyped three flow philosophies: flexible, hybrid and rigid. Stakeholders chose rigid, for data integrity. That was the right call for the system, and it meant my job became making a strict flow feel considerate.

  • Microcopy that explains each requirement before it’s enforced.
  • Progressive password feedback, as you type.
  • Mobile first inputs, so the strict flow stays short on a phone.
